Kitty Hawk and the Hunt for Hemingway's Ghost by Iain Reading

About the Book:
Kitty Hawk and the Hunt for Hemingway's Ghost is the exciting second installment in a new series of adventure mystery stories that are one part travel, one part history and five parts adventure. This second book in the series continues the adventures of Kitty Hawk, an intrepid teenage pilot who has decided to follow in the footsteps of her hero Amelia Earhart and make an epic flight around the entire world. After flying across North America Kitty's journey takes her down south to Florida where she plans to get a bit of rest and relaxation before continuing on with the rest of her long and grueling flight. As Kitty explores the strange and magical water world of the Florida Keys her knack for getting herself into precarious situations sweeps her headlong into the adventure of a lifetime involving mysterious lights, ancient shipwrecks, razor-toothed barracudas and even a sighting of the great Ernest Hemingway himself. This exhilarating story will have armchair explorers and amateur detectives alike anxiously following every twist and turn as they are swept across the landscape and history of the Florida Keys all the way from Key West to the strange and remarkable world of Fort Jefferson and the Dry Tortugas.

Kitty Hawk and the Hunt for Hemingway's Ghost is a perfect book to fire the imaginations of readers of all ages. Filled with fascinating and highly Google-able locations and history this book will inspire anyone to learn about and experience as much of our amazing world as they can - just like Kitty Hawk herself.
My Thoughts:
*I received this book for review from the author's publicist but this in no way affects my thoughts as expressed in this review*
It's very rare these days when I can say that a second book in a series is as good as the first. With Kitty Hawk and the Hunt for Hemingway's Ghost I can happily call it an exception. I just love this series so far! I am far past the age middle grade books are written for, seeing as I will be turning 18 in September, and yet it seems to me like this book really isn't just written for that crowd. The Kitty Hawk books are some of the rare ones in that they are good, clean and fun to read no matter the age. Whether it's reading a bit each night to a little one who can't yet handle chapter books themselves, to middle schoolers still discovering a love of reading(and to help reluctant readers develop one) all the way up to me a girl in my late teens.
I just love Kitty Hawk, even more so now than in the first book. The characters Mr Reading creates are all fun and approachable. These books truly belong on the shelves of young readers, I cannot rave about them enough. People ask me sometimes why I still occasional choose to read middle grade and I always say "why not?" without really thinking about it. Now that I really am sitting here and writing this review I have to say I have an idea. I've never really been a person to take genre into consideration anyways. If it sounds good, I'll read it. Looking at middle grade as a whole, though, I think it's because there's just not much stress in trying to conform to what's popular. Despite highly successful books like the Percy Jackson series and the Harry Potter series you just really don't see a whole, whole lot of middle grade. So, it's always different every time. The characters sit at that age that is just really fun to read about. Kitty Hawk has to be one of the greatest characters I can recommend a young girl(or boy!) to read about right up there with Daisy from Daisy and the Pirates. She knows what she wants and she goes for it. She's a highly intelligent young girl and she doesn't let anyone stomp on her dreams, whatever they may be. I have a strong feeling that one day(as far in the future as this may be)when I have my own children, the entire Kitty Hawk series will be one of the series that graces their bookshelves.
Over all, I recommend these books for kids of any age looking for a great read. These books are fun, educational and just put a big ol' smile on your face and have you ready for the next one. Love Kitty Hawk!

Kitty Hawk and the Curse of the Yukon Gold by Iain Reading

My Rating: 4 of 5 Stars

About the Book:
Kitty Hawk and the Curse of the Yukon Gold is the thrilling first installment in a new series of adventure mystery stories that are one part travel, one part history and five parts adventure. This first book of the Kitty Hawk Flying Detective Agency Series introduces Kitty Hawk, an intrepid teenage pilot with her own De Havilland Beaver seaplane and a nose for mystery and intrigue. A cross between Amelia Earhart, Nancy Drew and Pippi Longstocking, Kitty is a quirky young heroine with boundless curiosity and a knack for getting herself into all kinds of precarious situations.

After leaving her home in the western Canadian fishing village of Tofino to spend the summer in Alaska studying humpback whales Kitty finds herself caught up in an unforgettable adventure involving stolen gold, devious criminals, ghostly shipwrecks, and bone-chilling curses. Kitty's adventure begins with the lingering mystery of a sunken ship called the Clara Nevada and as the plot continues to unfold this spirited story will have armchair explorers and amateur detectives alike anxiously following every twist and turn as they are swept along through the history of the Klondike Gold Rush to a suspenseful final climatic chase across the rugged terrain of Canada's Yukon, the harsh land made famous in the stories and poems of such writers as Jack London, Robert Service and Pierre Berton. It is a riveting tale that brings to glorious life the landscape and history of Alaska's inside passage and Canada's Yukon, as Kitty is caught up in an epic mystery set against the backdrop of the scenery of the Klondike Gold Rush.

Kitty Hawk and the Curse of the Yukon Gold is a perfect book to fire the imagination of readers of all ages. Filled with fascinating and highly Google-able locations and history this book will inspire anyone to learn and experience more for themselves as Kitty prepares for her next adventure - flying around the world!

My Thoughts:
Kitty Hawk and the Curse of the Yukon Gold had me at the part in the synopsis where it states that she's a cross between Amelia Earheart, Nancy Drew and Pippi Longstocking-what could be better than that? . This book is full of adventure, history and imagination, I recommend this book to any middle grade reader on up who wants a great story with lots of cool little twists and turns turns!
One thing  I really liked about this book is that I actually learned quite a bit, but in a way that didn't seem forceful and more than anything added to the story. This is the first book in a series, and I found it to be great opening! I might go as far as to say that this series has the potential to be an ageless series to the tune of the Nancy Drew books as it really does have that sort of feel to it.
Kitty is an interesting character, and there really is never a dull moment when reading about her. She's extremely intelligent, witty, and oh so brave! I think she could make a wonderful role model for young girls, but I also feel that guys will enjoy this story too, with all the adventure!
From going to study humpback whales, to being kidnapped by a group of gold thieves this book is action-adventure practically from page one! If you're a fan of adventure, you won't be disappointed!
