While the eighth stem still holds up the Spider Mushroom like any other mushroom in the forest, the other stems must be earned by helping seven individuals overcome the seven deadly sins. With the help of a human outlaw whom she saves from drowning, Ivy sets off to earn the first stem from a wizard whose gluttony is causing his city to starve.

My Review:

I was pleasantly surprised by this book, and I think many other readers out there will be as well. I absolutely loved it from start to finish--it was a joy to step into Ivy's head!

Ivy Slaughter is a half human/half goblin, and therefore has always been treated as "less than" by her fellow goblins, including her own mother. Although she has many goblin-like features, she has an equal amount of human features, too, like the ability to have real feelings and emotions... and the ability to just really not like eating rotting meat like the rest of her family. It doesn't seem like anything is going to change until her grandmother, one of the elder goblins, offers her an opportunity to go on a quest and help each of the people that hold the seven stems of the Spider Mushroom(the eighth still being in the ground). If she completes the quest and drinks the juices from the eight stems together, she will be granted the ability to transform into anything she wants, AKA- full-blooded goblin. But, is that really what she wants?

Along the way, she meets Robin, who is constantly trespassing on Trapper land in order to complete his father's map. They decide to team up to complete Ivy's mission. 

This book was, obviously, a little dark in places, but not in a bad way. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found myself wanting more once I turned that last page. I can't wait for book two! Dawn Marshallsay has certainly got herself an amazing start to a series here, I've never read anything else like it. If you find yourself tired of the same old stories and plot lines, or just want to try something a little different, I highly recommend you check out Gluttony, as it's a choice I don't see anyone regretting!
