Once in a Blue Moon by Ken Christopher Ping
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
So, I'd never reviewed a short story collection before, but have read many. So, when Mr. Ping contacted me for a review, I figured, why not? As a whole, the collection was nice. Not absolutely breathtakingly amazing, but nice. I certainly do not regret reading, but I just feel that there was a little something missing.
The first story was probably my favorite, this was the one that seemed to have the most emotion for me, and it had a great build-up and if this was the only story in the collection, it would have been a four star. I like how it shows the differences in the brothers' personalities, but even it did not have an ending that made a whole lot of sense to me. Still my favorite of the collection though.
Then, the second story, though sweet, was missing something for me. I think it was the fact that it seemed to be trying too hard to get into the child's frame of mind, and therefore felt fake. The ending though, was absolutely beautiful.
The last story, though, was my least favorite. The beginning had a lot of draw and I was expecting something great because of that. But, it sort of fell through for me.
So, like I said, the collection as a whole was nice and I can see myself recommending to some people. For me, though, I just couldn't quite get into it. Nonetheless, the writing style flows smoothly and leaves little to be desired in that department, so I feel that was the saving grace in making me like the collection overall. Good for a quick read when your in the mood for a fairy tale-type read!
*I received this book for review from the author in exchange for an honest review, but this in no way affected my opinion or review.*
